Our culture would like to have a formless compassion without rules. But even that is a rule. We simply can’t escape rules. The Golden Rule is, after all, a rule. Earlier, we saw Jesus react to people who misuse rules; now we see him react to people who neglect rules. We instinctively know that Jesus is right about hypocrisy.
